The “darkest hour” captures a moment when things are at their worst. Türkiye’s 1950 general election, which brought the Democratic Party (DP) to power, was a major step toward democracy. During the twenty-seven years, a very short span of time, from the founding of the Republic to the 1950 election, Türkiye struggled to move beyond centuries of decadent Ottoman rule, realized fundamental reforms under Atatürk’s leadership, which charted a new path for our country, and successfully dealt with the challenges of the Second World War under President İnönü.

Türkiye Faced with Multiple Challenges

Neither the word “shocking” nor any of its synonyms, such as “appalling” or “distressing”, can properly describe the latest political developments in Türkiye. The İstanbul province has a Metropolitan Municipality and 39 county municipalities. In the March 2024 municipal elections, the Republican People’s Party (CHP) won the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality and 26 county municipalities, whereas the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) won only 13.

An Election to Determine Türkiye’s Identity and Future

On May 14, Türkiye will hold what can only be defined as “the last exit to democracy” presidential and parliamentary elections. The AKP has been in power for two decades. Its early years in power inspired cautious optimism. Its last decade in terms of foreign and security policy, domestic politics, independence of the judiciary, the economy, and Türkiye’s internal peace and unity has been a disaster. In brief, the people of Türkiye will give marks to the AKP government, and the people of the world will give marks to the people of Türkiye.
