Turkey’s Relations with Russia

On November 24, 2015 Turkish fighter jets downed a Russian Su-24 warplane for having violated Turkish airspace and the incident has led to a major setback in bilateral relations as well as regional complications (*). This is not sustainable.

From the 16th to the 20th century, the Ottoman and Russian Empires were in continuous military conflict. During the Cold War Turkey was NATO’s southern flank. It was only after the dissolution of the Soviet Union which marked the end of the Cold War that Turkish-Russian cooperation made remarkable progress in the fields of trade, energy, tourism and contracting services, leading to considerable interdependence. Termination of the Mistral Contract

The French-Russian deal for the sale of two Mistral class amphibious assault ships was announced by President Sarkozy on December 24, 2010 and signed in his presence by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin and French Defense Minister Alain Juppé on January 25, 2011. This was the largest defense contract concluded between a NATO member and Russia.

The date chosen to announce the deal could not have been a coincidence. It was Christmas Eve and President Sarkozy must have thought that a 1.2 billion euro contract would be welcome news to the French public and contribute to his standing as a promoter of French economic interests.

The communiqué issued by the Elysée said that Presidents Sarkozy and Medvedev were pleased with this unprecedented cooperation which reflected the two countries’ readiness and ability to develop substantial partnerships in all fields including defense and security. Okumaya devam et →

ABD-Rusya İşbirliği İçin Yeni Arayışlar

27 Haziran 2014 tarihli ve “Orta Doğu Senaryoları” başlıklı yazımı şöyle tamamlamıştım:
“… ABD ve Rusya’nın çıkarları Orta Doğu’da karmaşanın ve aşırılığın önlenmesinde yatmaktadır. Ortada, Suriye kimyasal silahlarının tasfiyesine ilişkin başarılı bir işbirliği örneği vardır. Taraflar İran nükleer programı konusunda da aynı masa etrafındadırlar. Bunlardan hareketle, Ukrayna’da gerilimin düşürülmesine, en azından sorunun ertelenmesine olanak verecek bir formülün mutlaka bulunması ve ABD ile Rusya’nın Orta Doğu’da istikrar adına işbirliği yapmaları gerektiğini tekrarlıyorum… “
MH17 sefer sayılı Malezya Hava Yolları uçağının Ukrayna’daki çatışma bölgesi üzerinde bir füze ile düşürülmesi Ukrayna bunalımını daha ileri bir noktaya taşıdı.
