Defining Days for Ukraine and Russia-West Relations

Over the past month, the world has remained focused on what was likely to prove the climactic episode of the Russia-Ukraine war.

In early July, President Donald Trump issued his harshest criticism of President Putin, stating that Washington was restarting its arms shipments to Ukraine to respond to Russian attacks on civilians. In the following days, he said, “We’re very unhappy with Russia and we’ll be doing very severe tariffs, at about 100%.” Then, Mr. Trump gave Russia a 50-day deadline for a ceasefire.

President Trump’s barrage of proposals and statements by senior US officials on peace in the Middle East and Ukraine have surprised European partners, triggering confusion and uncertainty. Last Friday, Vice-President Vance chastised European leaders for failing to listen to their voters. When asked about European participation in the negotiations with Russia, US Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia Kellogg said, “I think that’s not gonna happen.” Mr. Trump’s latest salvo, lost among others, was a nuclear deal with Russia and China to halve defense budgets.

The anxiety reflected in the major headlines of the past week has confirmed that 2024 is going to be a critical year for the West.

It seems that a growing number of Americans are not happy with the looming Biden-Trump rematch. The latter’s threatening remarks to European allies about their inadequate defense spending have added to worries in European capitals on the future of their relations with Washington.
