The anti-regime protests in Iran were the top development of global attention over the past weeks. In the background was the nature of the Iranian regime, its controversial and confrontational regional outreach, which, to a large extent, resulted from the US invasion of Iraq, the Syrian conflict, regional rivalries, and the failure of the Iran nuclear deal. The last one compelled me to look back at the past.

Over the past month, the world has remained focused on what was likely to prove the climactic episode of the Russia-Ukraine war.
In early July, President Donald Trump issued his harshest criticism of President Putin, stating that Washington was restarting its arms shipments to Ukraine to respond to Russian attacks on civilians. In the following days, he said, “We’re very unhappy with Russia and we’ll be doing very severe tariffs, at about 100%.” Then, Mr. Trump gave Russia a 50-day deadline for a ceasefire.

Last Friday, Vice-President Vance chastised European leaders for failing to listen to their voters. When asked about European participation in the negotiations with Russia, US Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia Kellogg said, “I think that’s not gonna happen.” Mr. Trump’s latest salvo, lost among others, was a nuclear deal with Russia and China to halve defense budgets.
