He also said that President Zelensky had little choice but to agree to the plan. “He’ll have to like it. And if he doesn’t like it then they should just keep fighting,” Mr. Trump told reporters. To Ukrainians, this sounded like an ultimatum, and there was a backlash in Europe.

President Trump’s 28-point Ukraine-Russia peace plan is now public knowledge, making it clear that since the August 15, 2025, Alaska summit, Washington and Moscow have remained engaged in behind-closed-doors diplomatic talks, working on the details of a peace deal, the basic parameters of which were agreed upon during that meeting.[i]

Before the Alaska summit of Presidents Putin and Trump on August 15, 2025, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov predicted that the meeting would last at least six to seven hours, adding that Moscow expected a “productive” meeting. The meeting lasted only three hours and did not result in a ceasefire, the West’s top priority. Nonetheless, the joint press conference was held as planned, no questions were taken, and Mr. Trump said very little beyond mentioning that it was an extremely productive meeting. Mr. Putin, as usual, reiterated that the “root causes” of the Ukraine conflict need to be eliminated before a full peace deal can be reached.

On February 28, 2025, the world witnessed an unprecedented public confrontation between President Trump and President Zelensky at the Oval Office, where the former and Vice President Vance castigated their guest for not being grateful for US support in Ukraine’s war with Russia. Three days later, President Trump temporarily suspended the delivery of all US military aid to Ukraine. Eventually, the incident was somehow put behind and arms shipments resumed.

Toward the end of 2024, Germany and France were engulfed in domestic political problems. Romania’s constitutional court annulled the country’s 2024 presidential election. Georgia remained in political turmoil. South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of martial law created havoc, and the National Assembly impeached him in a second vote. The US and its European allies continued providing Ukraine with economic and military assistance. Their motto has always been “as long as it takes”. However, such references became increasingly questionable. Mobilization became unpopular in Ukrainian society. By contrast, Russia regained momentum. Though welcomed, the fall of the Assad dynasty created anxiety not only in Syria but also in the Middle East. The war in Gaza continued with no end in sight.

The year 2024 was largely dominated by the wars in Ukraine, Gaza, and Lebanon, and in mid-summer attention started to shift toward the US presidential election.
President Biden was determined to run for a second term. A growing number of Democratic leaders urged him to leave the race. He fought them bitterly until he finally concluded that he had no other option than quitting. But that came too late. Thus, the Democratic Party not only lost the presidential election but the Republicans won the majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Then a race started among the actors in the two conflict areas for better bargaining positions before Mr. Trump assumed office.

The world remains focused on the wars in Ukraine and Gaza and the Iran-Israel confrontation. The former defines relations between Russia and the West and unfortunately, there is no path yet for a negotiated solution. The latter two are more of a challenge for the US, with Russia and China watching on the sidelines. How the Gaza conflict would evolve is likely to impact Washington’s standing in the world. In brief, these are not great times for global powers to stand up together against other global threats such as ISIS, a radical group that has proved its outreach on numerous occasions.

Article 2 (4) of the Charter of the United Nations reads, “All Members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.”
Was Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a violation of the Charter? Yes. Unfortunately, however, the Charter, a supreme international convention, has been violated multiple times in the past through invasions and military interventions not sanctioned by the UN, and coups carried out in numerous countries during the Cold War.

It seems that a growing number of Americans are not happy with the looming Biden-Trump rematch. The latter’s threatening remarks to European allies about their inadequate defense spending have added to worries in European capitals on the future of their relations with Washington.

On February 16, 2023, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died at a penal colony above the Arctic Circle, marking a dark day for Russia. A Le Monde article was titled “Navalny’s death buries the last hope for a free Russia”. In 2020, Navalny was poisoned in Siberia by what German laboratories later confirmed to be the nerve agent Novichok. His return to Moscow on January 17, 2021, knowing that he would immediately be detained, was a remarkable display of courage and patriotism. Someday, in Moscow, Russians will pay him their respects before his statue.
